Producer Kevin Williamson talks future of Vampire Diaries.

The producer and writer of Vampire Diaries had an interview with LA times, and he gives a broad idea for the upcoming episodes and stories and possible events happening in the serie. Let me tell you that it gives away some pretty good details to wait for.

Its a pretty long interview but I’ll try to summarize it.

Unlike some failures that the CW has had with some shows, Vampire Diaries is guaranteed to be on full season and when the Halloween Episode  aired, nine more episodes were added aside from the 13 in the making.  The producer has done a pretty good job with the story and he is constantly honoring the novels main story and is aware of the True Blood story line and Twilight-he doesn’t want to recycle stories. Here is what he actually says:

We’re really aware of it. We don’t want to step on any story lines, but at the same time, there are obvious similarities and obvious connections there. For example, vampires don’t age. There was a “True Blood” episode this season where Sookie was concerned about that , and of course, it’s going to come up for Elena as well. When she’s 40, Stefan will stll look 17. Things like that are universal in the vampire mythology. We know this isn’t a new story, a himan woman falling in love with a vampire, so we just do our best to tell the classic stories with our own twist. Ultimately, we’re going to go where our story takes us.

Oh and for those of you that come from all the way from the novels, here is what he says on that.

As a writer, is there more pressure when you’re adapting someone else’s work, to take care of the source materia?

Yes, there’s more pressure. We want to do the books justice. We’re going where the story takes us, but at the same time, we’re really trying to honor the original books. A novel doesn’t really lend itself to a 22 episode season, though, so there are obviously major differences. Our main concern is to honor the tone of the books and the major themes. We want to honor the love story: the romance, the betrayal.

The book”s fans are hard to please. For the first few episodes, I got alot of comments on the blog saying, “No, but Elena is supposed to be blond!”

I know! I just don’t understand that. I looked back to the book and tried to figure out the significance of her hair color and…nothing. To be honest, we were looking at blonds when we were casting, because we saw that she was blond in the book. But once we saw Nina, we just couldn’t get back to the blond thing. Actually, Nina came in and did an audition that–well, by her own admission, she blew the audition. She wasn’t feeling well, she was sick. But she went back to Canada and she just knew she could do better, so she sent us a videotape, and when we saw that, we knew.

I think its pretty cool  that the producer tries to at most to follow the novels. Which pleases novel fans–at some point. Anywho, I will summarize in bullet list format the good stuff that the producer gives away.

  • Matt’s character will play slightly more up ahead in the season, meaning we’ll get some inside on him.
  • Remember the episode “Lost Girls” where there is flashbacks? Well, expect more through out the season. The producer can’t wait to write about Stefan and Damon’s transformation to vampire or death as a human. And neither can I.
  • When casting was being held for Damon, Ian didn’t really pulled it off in his audition but the producer really liked him for the role of Damon. Ian really really really wanted the role that he convinced the producer to convince the network to choose him. As producer Kevin said “Ian was a gamble. We took a gamble and he delivered.” -In truth Ian is awesome.
  • Producer Kevin loves writing for Damon. He’s dark and a killer. Oh and if you’re waiting for him to soften up…well he doesn’t give us much hope. It’ll be a long time for that.
  • Stefan is going to have to feed at human blood at some point. So wait for that one to come out!
  • For Kevin W. highschool is a horror movie…and the epic moments of life. Makes ME wonder how HIS highschool experience was. :)

For Nina and Ian to have tanked their auditions, they are rocking their rolls as Elena and Damon. Just goes to show that you can’t always know what someone is capable of at first glance.

I’m anxiously waiting for the episode where Stepan feeds on human blood, at least (if they stay true to his character), he won’t kill. That’s all that can be asked for in fictionland when one is at the mercy of a vampire. LOL I’m looking forward to the flashbacks into Stephan and Damon’s transformation.

All in all, it sounds like there is some pretty good stuff coming down the pipes for The Vampire Diaries.

i cant wait…. this is gonna be soo amazing…

just reali wanna see a preview for the next epp// ohh i hope that its elanas blood like the books that he feeds on… :D

    iheartstefanxx

  3. Cheyenne says:

Me too, because for them in the books, Stefan feeding on her blood and her letting him was an act of love :]
I also liked when Damon fed from her though because it showed the difference in the act of love and the act of revenge.

  4. miriam says:

    :O
    he feeds ON ELENA>

    wow.
    makes ME wonder.
    wiil producer DO that?

    • Brea says:

Spoilers much? Some people haven’t read the books (like me), please don’t ruin it for them.

      • Ashly says:

Thats what happens when you start read what people think about the book. All I can say is if you don’t want to know don’t read.

        • Brea says:

dude i dont care if people are putting spoilers in, they just need to put in the *SPOILERS* thing before they write it. that way everyones happy.

        • jkufg says:

well i think tht sometimes ppl want to know but then when the real thing goes on like on the telly your just like ohh bummer i really wished i didnt read but u cant help it but its hard to not watch it on the telly

          • Rachel says:

I don’t think it really matters if someone posts anything about spoilers or not. If someone doesn’t want to read it, then remember that there is a chance that something could come up! And if you get pissed when someone spoils the episode… just read the damn book! It will save you a whole lot of arguing time!

  5. Ellen says:

Loyal to the books? my a**e.

    Jeremy wasn’t in the book.
Vicki wasn’t turned into a vampire, and she didn’t die.
Caroline doesn’t know they are vampires.
The vampire blond (who’s name escapes me) wasn’t in the book.

I have no idea what they are reading, but it sure as h**l wasn’t the series I have!

    Rant over.

It is a good series, if it didn’t insist it was based on the books, as it clearly isn’t.

    • Gabi says:

shut up! of course the series are different they have to be, or who ready the book would know every thing and it would be boring, and with more actors that more history, so one season wouldn’t be made of like 5 episodes!

      • hoolahoop says:

So that means every adaptation of a novel to the screen should change the story? What about Lord of the Rings, what about Harry Potter? I agree with Ellen, I am astounded they say they are staying true to the books. In what way? The story is completely different! I don’t understand why Meredith isn’t in the series, I don’t know why Caroline is friends with them, I don’t know why they added Jeremy, I don’t know why Vicki was Matt’s brother. Not to mention Stefan avoids Elena like the plague when he meets her and is very forthcoming about the fact she resembles Katherine… The plot of the books was fine and there’s more than enough meat in those four books to make a decent series! Each True Blood series is made from ONE book! This series is FOUR books. Let’s face it, they jumped on the Vampire bandwagon for the money, not for the love of the books. In doing so, they have completely disrespected the story and L.J. Smith. I read these books in 1999 and re-read them pretty much every year and for them to say they’re being true to the books smarts a little.

        • S_Westcott says:

          Damn right hoolahoop!!

I for one like the series but it is NOTHING like the books. I look at it like a whole different entinity with the same name.

        • Jessica says:

Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings are movies that can take the book and condense it into about two hours, you can’t really compare a TV series with a movie series. Also True Blood has changed a whole lot from the books when making the show (Biggest example would be all plot lines including Jessica who wasn’t in any of the books). I haven’t read the Vampire Diaries books so I don’t know if they are combining books but certain things are combined from the books in True Blood as well (Maryanne was introduced half way through the first season when her character is from the second book). You mentioned that there are four Vampire Diaries books, there are nine Sookie Stackhouse novels to date with many more already being promised for the future, I don’t see the point of mentioning that. In my opinion True Blood and Vampire Diaries are both great TV series that change a lot from the story lines but still deliver good content and high ratings. I try not to dwell on what they changed from the books and just enjoy it for what it is.

  6. josiah says:

in the poster of elena stephan and damon elena is wearing of the vampire day-light ring thingy..
    is she a vampire??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!???

  7. Cheyenne says:

    *spoiler*

In the book there was more of a ElenaxDamon twist on the storyline. Does anyone know if that is going to be portrayed in the tv series at all?

    • Kolbycheese88 says:

In the series there hasn’t been much of a Elena and Damon. But if you watch the promo it looks like there will be more of an Elena and Damon story, about time!

  8. marie says:

i cannt say much about the books for i have only read the first one. after watching the tv series i wanted to read the books. i was taken by the fact that there are many differences in characters. mainly in elanas character.
not only was elana blonde in the book but she was also a bit of a high school princes and a bit self absorbed. she made me thing more of the character caroline in the tv series. its almost as if they have them backwards.
these differences among many others are what makes it hard to believe that the producer wants to keep it along the same story line. they have changed it in a way that might not have been good.
dont get me wrong. both are good but maybe they shouldnt share the same title.

  9. jkufg says:

this is crazy i jst wanted to know why marie wants revenge!

  10. graceface says:

i read the books after i watched the series and i didnt really care bout the changes caus lord of the rings and harry potty are films. not series. if it stuck too much to the books there wouldnt be enough story line for one series. And isnt there 5 books?

  11. Rachel says:

I think there are going to be more like 7 books in TVD!

  12. nina says:

omg u guys dont be mean and enjoy the movie cuz i still didn’t read or watch it (: and so yea cool i like de pic>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.hehehee
