Get more “book” in the series?

February 5th, 2010 by Sepsis

Recently I did experience a lot of controversy whether the show should get back “to the roots”, which are of course the books of L. J. Smith or not.

Of course these guys got a point when saying: If you call a series like a book and adept most of the characters, at least get most of the plot into it, too.

But there are other guys (where I include myself) that say: Just because you take your inspiration out of something it does not mean you have to take the whole work. It is actually far more interesting to follow the series when you can’t be sure what happens next.

Not to forget even the author said she likes the series. So what does this tell us except that the plot of the show is good?

OK I am not really objective, admitted, however the majority must be. So let me/us know what you think.

Should Elena have a sister, should she be blond, or is everything simply perfect the way it is?

Elena-Blond

yours sincerely

I think that Elena’s look its not the most important think about the series… its kind of awkward to look that picture haha i mean… i like the way that Nina plays Elena but i think that it really must be something else in the series from the books… its interesting whats going on but it should be more like in the books… well thats what i think… even when i looooove the series… i love the books too…

The books are great, and I enjoyed them imensely. The series is a different medium, and to me should be somewhat different. It would not be as much fun to watch if I knew exactly everything that was going to happen based on having read the books. It’s based loosely on L J Smiths books with a few jaw dropping surprizes, and that makes it very interesting and fun to watch. I think it’s more important for a film adaptation (movie) to me exactly like a book than it is for a TV series.

I prefer series elena to book elena hands down, book elena is, lets face it, a spoilt bitch (atleast in the first one). And all the drama in the series is fantastic. So in my opinion the books are good but the series is better.

    • bell says:

Agreed, I was constantly annoyed at book elena. And blonde+blue eyes is such a stereotype. I way prefer the tv series!

    • unknown says:

I totally agree with you there. The series is great the way it is and I wouldn’t change a thing. I very much prefer Elena from the series to the Elena from the book, series elena shows more creativity and relates. Book elena just shows some girl who is the popular one getting what she wants and thinking that going after Stephen is a game.

    • brenda says:

      I TOTALLY AGREE
      WITH YOU
I HATE THE ELENA IN THE BBOKK
      BUT LOVE KATHERINE

  4. Tilli says:

    I Agree 100%

  5. Maru says:

I think that the look of Elena is not important, but they change a lot the feeling of damon to elena.
He is the same of the book, but his feelings aren´t.
    I don´t know, that is my opinion…

Let face it guys, when basing a television series on a book/s it cannot be the same.
Books are written to entertain a certain audience and television series are produced to entertain a different audience.
I read the books and I thought they were quite boring, Elena was too classsic being the blue-eyed blonde and Stefan was simply too moody. Damon is really the only one playing his true character but even that has it’s limits, hes acutally alot nicer in the series. I for one am glad that Elena is only with Stefan and this tv series is absolutely amazing!

  7. Bec says:

NOOOOOOO SHE CANT HAVE A SISTER

  8. Belle says:

There are a few changes that they made that I like, #1 being Elena’s personality in the show, and that Damon is more likeable in the tv series and has some what of a good side as opposed to just straight evil.

I like Jeremy being in the series better than Elena’s little sister (the name escapes me). Jeremy is more mature (though didn’t always act his age :p) and knows what’s going on so there’s more you can do with his character, and a lot more situations you can put him in.

At the same time though, I agree that they should put a bit more of what happened in the book in the series. In the first few episodes they did a good job of making it their own thing while putting in a few references to the book, but now it feels like the only reference to the book is the title of the tv show, and the character names. I hope they put in more references to the book, because this is, after all based off the book.

*spoilers if you havent seen the last 5 episodes* ok so i love the TV elena wayyyyy better than the book elena but i think that she should have a sister from her birth parents.

  10. kim says:

I don’t know if the ones who made the tv serie have read the books but there are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many differences between them.. I really like the books and I like the tv serie as well so I’m sorry to say but I think that’s really stupid :s Don’t call it the Vampire Diaries ‘the tv serie from the books’ or give it another name or SOMETHING ’cause I don’t know.. it doesn’t feel to me like it’s the same..

  11. faraaahway says:

    Looks dont really matter seriously, and like some of the others… I prefer series-Elena (;

Back to the point… well i just finished reading the books… and I did watched the series first, so I was sort of confused as there are quite a few differences with the ‘story’
I think that they (TV) are doing such a good job right now with the story but I would like to see more of the books (story wise)

iHeart VampDiaries *Books & TV Series*

    • brenda says:

      the struggle
      the dark reunion
      the nightfall
and there is a neww one but havent read it

  13. Gon says:

the series is BASED! on the book it isnt the book on the screen so dont complain and accept the tv show as it is because it is great i love the books but i love the series too and its better the fact that they arent the same =)

  14. Karaokestar81 says:

Vampire Diaries, L.J. Smith (my favorite author) originally released on paperback in 1991, thus I was so annoyed by twilight (released in 2005). I felt it was a hacked version. Then the movie came out. When I heard that they were making vampire diaries into a TV show, I was intrigued.. But pissed/annoyed; I knew people would think it was a rip of Twilight. Sigh, I was right. I am not the casting manager, so I don’t know if Twilight was the reason they chose a brunette to play Elena. I hope not. I have accepted them as two separate stories. It was difficult to do, but I overcame my revulsion and accepted it for what it is. I would enjoy it more if they had followed the book for the first couple of seasons at least, and THEN extended the story.

    Gon :
Based on means you keep the story, “inspired by” allows room for change.
    Anonymous:
The whole “spoiled” part of the story is known as character building. By the end of the series she becomes very altruistic. You must remember that the books are aimed at young adults, or teenagers if you prefer. I started reading them when I was 12. The purpose of character building in a book aimed at teens is to teach life lessons. The reader likes the character, grows with them, and when the book is done wants to be like them.
    Belle:
You really didn’t pay attention to, or understand Damon’s character. He isn’t evil, Elena thinks that is all there is too him at first, until she starts to get to know him. Stefan is the strait edge church boy, helping out in a nursing home. Then Damon would be the Smoking in the boy’s room, tapping the keg at a party boy. It’s not evil in the sense that you are making it sound. It’s just quiet and restrained vs. loud and rebellious.
The part of Margaret as a sister is to show a family connection but to also at the same time alienate her from her family. Her Parents are dead, she lives with an aunt that isn’t comfortable in her “mom” role, having a four year old sister keeps her connected to the family, but she can’t really confide in her. So her friends are her confidants and she falls for a “boy” who also has no solid family connections.
    Zoya:
Can you read? The book and the show are both The Vampire Diaries, and the introduction to this blog clearly states “the books of L. J. Smith”
    Kim:
I agree with you, there are enough changes to give it another name, especially since I haven’t seen a Diary/Journal since the second (?) episode…… though I can’t think of one.

    • Drea says:

i agree wholeheartedly with everything you mentioned, it was really well written – I started to read the books at 12 yrs old in 1993 and fell in love instantly with the character Elena, I grew with her as you mentioned is the point.

I enjoy the series as well, although art times I crave for more references, as they are immensely enjoyable to recap something once read in childhood.
